ABSTRACT This study presents a new orchid species of the genus Catasetum belonging to the group of species with symmetrical and parallel antennae. It was found in terra-firme and floodplain forests in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Pará. We provide a formal description of the new species, images, and notes on distribution, habitat, phenology, flower visitors and preliminary conservation status. We compare it with C. cristatum and C. barbatum, both sympatric and morphologically most similar to the new species. It was preliminarily classified in the Endangered (EN) category according to IUCN criteria based on the extent of occurrence, area of occupation, number of occurrence locations and the risks that the known populations are exposed to (deforestation and predatory collection).

RESUMO Este estudo apresenta uma nova espécie de orquídea do gênero Catasetum, do grupo de espécies cujas antenas são simétricas e paralelas. Foi encontrada em florestas de terra-firme e igapó nos estados do Amazonas e Pará, Brasil. Fornecemos uma descrição formal da nova espécie, imagens e comentários referentes à distribuição, habitat, fenologia, visitantes florais e estatus de conservação. A comparamos com C. cristatum e C. barbatum, que ocorrem em simpatria e são morfologicamente mais semelhantes à nova espécie. Ela foi preliminarmente classificada na categoria Em Perigo (EN) segundo os critérios da UICN, com base na extensão de ocorrência, área de ocupação, número de localidades de ocorrência e os riscos a que as populações conhecidas estão expostas (desmatamento e coleta predatória).

Abstract In the present study we propose a new Catasetum taxon belonging to the group of species with symmetrical and converging antennae. It was found in a vegetation of “terra firme” and “campinarana” in the central Brazilian Amazon. A detailed description of the taxon is given as well as a photograph plate and comments relating to distribution, habitat, phenology and conservation status. It is compared to C. rivularium and C. barbatum which are sympatric species and somewhat similar to the new taxon. RESUMO É apresentado o primeiro registro de Vanilla labellopapillata para o Estado do Amazonas, Brasil, na região de Manaus, sendo este o limite oeste da espécie, anteriormente só conhecida da localidade tipo no estado do Pará. É apresentada uma breve descrição da espécie e comentários taxonômicos e ecológicos da espécie no contexto da nova localidade.

ABSTRACT The first record of Vanilla labellopapillata is presented for the state of Amazonas, Brazil, in the region of Manaus, now the western limit of the species, which was previously known only from the type locality in the state of Pará. A brief description is provided and taxonomic and ecological aspects of the species are discussed in the light of this new finding.

We describe andillustrate a new species of the genus Laelia. L. mottae Archila, Chiron,Szlach. & E.A. Pérez-García. For many years, this species wasconsidered a dwarf variant of Laelia anceps, however, the analysis offield-coming and cultivate specimens enabled us to conclude that they actuallyare two species. Laelia mottae comes from south-eastern Guatemala andsouthern Honduras. We compare the main morphological characters between L.anceps and L. mottae, and we discuss the differences in distribution,habitat, and cultivation between these two species of horticultural interest.

Durante muchosaños esta especie se consideró como una variante enana de Laeliaanceps, sin embargo, el análisis de ejemplares, tanto silvestrescomo cultivados, permitió establecer que en realidad se trata de dosespecies. Laelia mottae es exclusiva del sureste de Guatemala y del surde Honduras. Se comparan los principales caracteres morfológicos de L.anceps y L. mottae, y se discuten las diferencias en sudistribución, hábitat y cultivo.

O endemismo e a riqueza das espécies são medidas complementares da biodiversidade e atributos úteis para uma definição eficaz de áreas de preservação. Estes atributos são aqui aplicados à FlorestaAtlântica brasileira, baseados em um grupo de orquídeas endêmicas deste bioma, o gênero Baptistonia. A análise da riqueza revela uma região particularmente rica (a Serra do Castelo, ES) e seis outras regiões ricas. Três destas regiões apresentam índice de endemismo superior a 1. Oito áreas prioritárias para conservação são definidas. Relações hierárquicas de endemismo entre estas áreas são avaliadas com base em análise de parcimônia de endemicidade. Do conjunto destas relações e da hipótese filogenêtica do gênero Baptistonia deduz-se que a origem deste gênero se situa na Serra do Catelo. Além do mais, esta análise confirma a existência de dois grandes centros de endemismo na zona ecológica sul da Mata Atlântica.

Species endemism and species richness are complementary concepts usually used in biodiversity evaluation. They can be useful tools for efficiently defining conservation areas. In the present study, they are applied to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, based on an orchid group endemic to this biome, the genus Baptistonia. The study of the species richness shows one very rich area (The Serra do Castelo, ES) and six rich areas. Three of these areas show an endemism index greater than 1. Eight areas, most important for biodiversity conservation, are proposed. Hierarchical relationships of endemism between nine phytogeographical areas are evaluated based on parsimony analysis of endemicity. This analysis confirms: (a) that two important endemism centers can be recognized in the southern ecological part of the Atlantic Forest, and (b) together with the phylogenetic relationships within the genus Baptistonia, that the Serra do Castelo appears to be the diversification center of the genus.
